Hobby Airport K9 Exercises

Have you ever wondered how they train the dogs that walk around airport terminals, sniffing luggage and carry-on baggage? Would you like to get an up-close look at the training exercises?

We have been asked if our alumni would be interested in role player support at the William P. Hobby Airport (HOU). The canine unit at HOU specializes in passenger screening and in order for the K9 unit to conduct training exercises, they have to use role players. Being a role player simply means acting like a flying passenger in the airport while maintaining the training aid the canine is searching for. Role players are a pivotal component of the training program and without constant role player support, they are unable to conduct training. Typically, role players or decoys dress in casual attire they would normally fly in and they encourage decoys to bring some type of carry-on bag to assume the look of a flying passenger.

The training takes place most Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 0645-0900. We have been asked if CFC could provide 1 or 2 CERT volunteers every so often (possibly every few weeks) to support their training program, as they also have a number of agencies, departments, and businesses that provide role players. If two or more friends like to volunteer together, the K9 Unit welcomes group participation, and will work with the group to schedule a time.

If need be, the K9 Unit can send someone in a government vehicle to pick up the role player(s). Otherwise, role players meet at the K9 Unit’s off-site offices, at 8876 Gulf Freeway, Houston, Texas, 77017, and then the role players would be driven to the airport.
